Project Info:

Brandenburg completed the demolition and environmental remediation of the coal fired generating station and related structures, located along the Delaware River. The facility began operation in 1930 with a generating capacity of 82 megawatts, until retired in 2014. Brandenburg’s careful planning, sequencing and coordination of events was required. The decommissioning process began with asbestos and universal waste removal and included salvageable equipment being recycled and re-purposed. Utility work included air gapping of all piping, conduits and underground lines leading to/from the buildings be deconstructed. Due to the tidal waters, highly trained divers were required to seal the intake and discharge lines along the Delaware River. The crew utilized excavators to remove the coal conveyors, crusher and transfer houses, boiler house, turbine hall, precipitators, coal yard and surrounding buildings. Brandenburg dismantled the structure and prepared it for recycling using excavators equipped with hydraulic attachments. The smokestacks were skillfully brought down and dismantled. Concrete foundations were removed 2’ below final grade and the site was backfilled utilizing the brick, block and concrete generated by the demolition activities. A mobile crushing plant was used to process the material to -6”. The 19-month project resulted in 96% of materials from the site being recycled.
