Project Info:

Brandenburg completed demolition work at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo, polar bear habitat. The polar bear exhibit included a 3,000 square-foot swimming pool that was created more than 30 years ago. Brandenburg utilized track excavators equipped with multiple attachments, and skid steer loaders to demolish and process the building, slabs, foundations, and walls. Controlling fugitive debris and dust emissions from the demolition activities was of vital importance and accomplished using water and a variety of engineering controls. Brandenburg took exceptional care not to disturb the neighboring facilities and habitats, existing utilities, or the adjacent public areas. All concrete removed during demolition was crushed to three inches minus and the material was used as backfill onsite. All demolition debris was recycled, removed, or disposed from the site in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal guidelines. Construction on the new polar bear habitat, with significantly more land and plenty of access to water, is slated to be completed in Spring.
