Project Info:

Brandenburg, an OSHA VPP Star level contractor, was hired by Northwestern University to demolish the 17-story former Prentice Women’s Hospital, vacated in 2011. The unique cloverleaf structure, designed by Chicago architect Bertrand Goldberg, revolutionized maternity care when it opened in 1975. Brandenburg used its skilled workforce and equipment in a unique fashion to minimize vibration, noise and dust during demolition. Brandenburg installed scaffolding and heavy duty canopies around the perimeter to protect adjacent buildings, pedestrian and vehicular traffic. A floor-by-floor demolition method, utilizing light weight excavators and skid steer load- ers, was used to demolish from the penthouse down to the fourth floor. Excavators were used to remove the remainder of the structure. Brandenburg backfilled the site and performed restorative construction. The project was completed on time, with no recordable incidents. Northwestern University plans to build a 45-story biomedical research facility on the site. The new research facility will focus on cures for heart disease, cancer and childhood diseases.
